French Chair in Wood and Yellow Upholstery, France, 1950's

This expressive armchair was produced by Bow Wood in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, just outside Paris. The frame is built from bent laminated wood with a dark, worn finish that shows the grain and age of the material. The armrests are sculpted from solid wood and shaped to follow the curve of the arms, giving the chair a strong and almost architectural character.

The seat and backrest are upholstered in a yellow canvas, fixed with visible tacks and supported underneath by sinuous steel springs and jute webbing — a typical construction method of the time. The legs are reinforced with brass cuffs, which serve both as a decorative detail and as structural reinforcement.

With its curved lines and confident proportions, the chair bridges the gap between industrial production and artisanal detail. The original label under the seat confirms its French origin. It’s a rare piece that still feels relevant, especially for interiors that mix design history with texture and soul.
