Pierre Chapo

Pierre Chapo (1927–1987) was a French designer and craftsman, trained in architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before turning to woodworking after meeting a shipbuilding carpenter in 1947. Working chiefly in solid elm and oak, he opened his own Paris gallery before relocating to Gordes, in Provence, in 1967 to establish his furniture workshop, and made the ‘Godot bed’ for Samuel Beckett. He won a gold medal from the city of Paris in 1960 and a bronze medal at the 1967 Société des artistes décorateurs exhibition.
