Mathieu Matégot

Mathieu Matégot (1910–2001) was a Hungarian-born designer who trained at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest before settling in France, where he became a French citizen after the Second World War. Working from a Paris workshop, he pioneered the use of bent steel tube and perforated sheet metal in furniture, producing pieces such as the Nagasaki chair (1954) and Copacabana armchair (1955), now held in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Centre Georges Pompidou; he later became a leading figure in postwar French tapestry design.
