Wall Mounted Credenza by Paolo Buffa for Serafino Arrighi, Italy, 1950's

Paolo Buffa wall-mounted credenza, Italy, 1950s. This compact cabinet is executed with a vertically ribbed front, rounded side panels, a glass top, and a brass key detail. The piece was made by master cabinetmaker Serafino Arrighi, who collaborated closely with Buffa and was particularly known for his finely executed ribbed wood panels.

The relief of the front doors is a defining element. The vertical ribs introduce depth and rhythm, contrasting with the smooth surrounding surfaces. This type of ribbing is characteristic of Arrighi’s workshop and appears in several important Buffa commissions from the same period. The small brass key is another typical Buffa detail, functional but also decorative, and immediately recognisable within his body of work.

The proportions are carefully considered. The rounded side elements soften the overall geometry, while the glass top adds lightness and allows the craftsmanship of the woodwork to remain visually dominant. When exposed to changing daylight, the ribbed surface creates subtle variations in shadow and reflection, giving the cabinet a quiet but constant presence on the wall.

This credenza clearly shows the amount of labour and skill involved in its making. It is a refined example of Italian post-war craftsmanship, combining architectural clarity with tactile detail, and a strong addition to a serious Paolo Buffa collection.
