Set of 2 'Romantica' Chairs by Piero Ranzani for Elam, Italy, 1960's

Rare pair of 1960s lounge chairs by Piero Ranzani for Elam, Italy. The first thing you notice is the shape: soft, generous curves in the seat and armrests, almost reminiscent of early Artifort, but with a distinctly Italian touch. The proportions are low, comfortable and calm, with a sculptural silhouette that still feels modern today.

The wooden construction is another strong point. The frame is built from two contrasting hardwoods: a warm walnut above and a darker tropical hardwood for the legs. The legs themselves have a nice stepped detail where the two woods meet, giving the chairs a layered, architectural look. It’s a simple detail, but it lifts the whole design and makes the chairs stand out.

Piero Ranzani was part of a younger generation of Italian designers working in the late 1950s and 60s, when comfort, rounded forms and new upholstery techniques were becoming central to Italian living-room design. His work for Elam is known for balanced proportions and for giving lounge pieces a softer, more inviting presence while still keeping a clear, modern structure. These chairs are a great example of that approach.

The original upholstery is completely worn and the foam has collapsed, so they need full new upholstery. The curves of the seat are worth preserving exactly as they are. A high-quality wool in a light tone would work beautifully with the contrast of the woods and bring the design back to life.
