Modernist Coffee Table in Imbuia Wood, Brazil, 1950's

The piece has a very calm, almost understated presence, but the shaping is where it becomes interesting. The top is not flat in feeling — there’s a gentle, almost organic bow through the length, which gives it that quiet, hand-shaped character you see in better mid-century work. The edges are clean but not sharp, and the thickness of the top gives it weight without feeling heavy.

The legs are slightly angled and subtly tapered, positioned in a way that keeps the silhouette light. From the side especially, the profile becomes quite strong — almost architectural, but still warm because of the material.

The wood has a beautiful, even tone with natural variation across the surface. It reads somewhere between cherry and a light-toned hardwood, with a soft glow rather than a high gloss. The grain is visible but not overly pronounced, which fits the restrained design.

What works well here is the balance: simple construction, but just enough curvature and proportion to lift it out of the ordinary. It could function as a bench, a low coffee table, or even a hall piece — very versatile without losing identity.

Condition is very good with light, honest signs of use consistent with age.
