Living Room Set by H.P. Berlage Opus 38 in Oak, The Netherlands, 1920’s
Living room set by H.P. Berlage Opus 38 in mahogany and fabric and metal details, The Netherlands 1920s. The set consists of a chair (74 (D) x 66 x 86 (H)) cm and a chaise longue (74 (D) x 145 x 80 (H)) and footstool (20 (D) x 30 x 10H)). Straight lines in combination with interesting details. The light fabric forms a nice contrast with the dark mahogany.
This set was sold through one of the first interior designstores in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, called ‘t Binnenhuis. This store was established by H.P. Berlage himself and famous Dutch Art Deco designer Jac. van den Bosch. H.P. Berlage was particularly famous because of his architectural designs like ‘De Beurs in Berlage’ in Amsterdam (see last picture). Both pieces are signed with a signature of the designer and a small plaquette of ”t Binnenhuis’.
The same set, however without the stool, is part of the collection of the ‘Haags Gemeentemuseum’, in The Hague The Netherlands and is also pictured in the book ‘Rechte stoelen, rechtschapen burgers. Wonen volgens ‘t Binnenhuis 1900-1929’ by Yvonne Brentjens.
It’s an absolute historical piece adding some classic design to your interior.
