The piece stands out for its refined construction and the use of contrasting woods: solid teak trays paired with a darker Brazilian rosewood frame — a thoughtful combination of materials that enhances the graphic character of the piece.

Both trays are made from solid teak, impressively thin at around 4 mm, and are ingeniously integrated into the frame. Each tray rests within precisely milled grooves in the uprights — not only at the top, but also lower down where the second tray slots in. They’re not screwed on; instead, the structure is held in place by tension: once the original screws in the crossbars are tightened, the frame gently secures the trays within the uprights. The trays remain lightly seated and can still move if lifted — a subtle and elegant construction detail.

The recessed stretchers give the trolley a floating appearance, and its generous proportions make it well-suited for serving breakfast in bed or displaying a full table setting. The piece runs smoothly on its original wheels, which have been recently serviced, and all edges remain crisp.

Cees Braakman was head of design at Pastoe from 1945 to 1978. He was instrumental in shaping the company’s postwar identity, introducing modular systems and lightweight forms influenced by European modernism and Japanese design. His work is marked by clarity, economy of materials, and a strong sense of function — all clearly visible in this elegant trolley.

Dimensions
Width: 65 cm
Height: 59 cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1020/8041/4083/files/f_45548222_1750498427252_bg_processed.jpg?v=1781284031
grappa-trolley-cesare-lacca-glass-brass-metal-italy-1950s-f-39400962
Grappa Trolley by Cesare Lacca in Glass, Brass and Metal. The mahogany forms great contrast both in colour as in material, with the brass and glass. The glass is still original and has no chips.
